The cult’s beliefs were a mix of Christianity, Gnosticism, ancient Egyptian religions, and occult sciences. The leaders claimed to be in contact with the spirit world and had knowledge of cosmic secrets. Belief in reincarnation and the possibility of the soul traveling to stars like Sirius were central tenets. They strongly believed in the imminent end of the world (apocalypse) due to an environmental catastrophe and claimed that only chosen individuals would be able to travel through a fiery tunnel to the star Sirius and be saved. For this salvation, members were expected to dedicate themselves to the cult and pay money; the cult’s wealth reached $93 million.
The group’s leadership was highly dictatorial and interfered in all aspects of the members’ lives. Tensions within the cult began due to financial questions and doubts about the supernatural abilities of the leaders, which were often created through trickery. These tensions reached a climax with the disobedience of one member, leading to the brutal murder of him, his wife, and their baby in Canada. At the same time, in October 1994 and December 1995, dozens of members died in Switzerland and France in mass suicide events involving fires. The bodies were sometimes arranged in star shapes, strengthening the theory of ritualistic suicide. Letters found later mentioned traveling to the star Sirius as the reason for their deaths. The police eventually concluded that the deaths were suicides in a ritual ceremony, although some relatives did not accept this explanation.
